Idaho Repertory Theatre (IRT), the professional summer theatre in residence at University of Idaho, will soon present its second play of the summer. The tender and comedic one-woman show, “My 80-Year-Old Boyfriend, An Award-Winning True Musical,” debuts July 22-24 at the Forge Theatre at 404 Sweet Avenue in Moscow.
Described by audiences and the press as unbelievable Broadway-level entertainment, “My 80-Year-Old Boyfriend” stars University of Idaho Master of Fine Arts theatre candidate Charissa Bertels in the lead role. Bertels is a Broadway actress and champion of new musicals. A powerhouse performer in “Boyfriend,” Bertels shares the funny and heart-warming true story of her friendship with an older, wealthy man she met as a struggling actress in New York City.
Tickets cost $5 to $25 and are on sale now at uidaho.edu/theatretix.
Featuring literary and musical work by internationally regarded Christian Duhamel, from Kellogg, Idaho, and Ed Bell, the play premiered in 2017 at the Merrimack Repertory Theatre in Massachusetts and has received rave reviews on touring.
Musicals have been an important part of every IRT season since its inception, said Robert Caisley, producing artistic director of IRT and chair of the U of I Department of Theatre Arts.
“Even though we are starting small in our first season back from a too-long hiatus, this show really packs a tremendous punch,” he said. “Charissa’s performance is extraordinary. Moscow audiences are in for a treat!”
The production is funded in part by the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences.
